The Story® (Inored) variety: agronomic and eating characteristics

Story® (varietal denomination Inored cv) is an apple variety bred by INRAE in Angers, France, from a Pinova × X6398 cross. It combines colour, flavour, productivity, disease resistance and outstanding storage.

Fruit characteristics

ColourIntense glossy red, 75–100% coverage
FleshWhite, dense and firm (≈9 kg / 20 lb)
FlavourSweet and balanced, 13–16° Brix, low acidity
SizeGood and uniform, high % of class-I fruit
StorageControlled Atmosphere: 12 months with a special cold protocol
Shelf lifeVery good after storage, minimal shrinkage

Resistance and plant health

Story® is resistant to common races of apple scab (Venturia inaequalis) thanks to the Vf/Rvi6 gene (it also carries Rvi1/Vg). This resistance reduces fungicide treatments and makes it especially suitable for organic production. It shows moderate susceptibility to powdery mildew, managed with standard orchard practices.

The tree and production

A medium-to-low vigour tree with an open, well-branched habit that is easy to train. Production is high and regular, with good crop distribution and no pre-harvest drop, resulting in a high percentage of class-I fruit.

Calendar

  • Flowering: April (Northern Hemisphere).
  • Harvest: autumn, ≈15–25 days after Golden Delicious.
  • Commercial availability: from October and through much of the season thanks to storage.

Adapted to warm climates

Story® keeps its colour and quality in regions with warm summers, making it especially well suited to southern and Mediterranean production areas. This is a real advantage over other red apples that lose colour in warm-temperate climates.
